You Are Not Doomed To Spend
Your Life Managing Your Stress

Finally! A book that challenges the very underpinnings of how we look at stress, power and personal responsibility.

Who’s In Charge?
Think you’re in charge of your life? Have you ever said, “He made me mad” or “My job stresses me out” or “I’m under a lot of stress”? If so, then you’re not in charge. Dr. Sheperd will help you regain control.

This Book Attacks the Stress Myth
For years poorly informed stress “experts” have spread the misconception that stress exists outside of you. They have even created silly paper-and-pencil tests to measure life’s “stressors.” Their advice is that you must learn to try to manage your stress like you try to manage a pack of wild dogs. Dr. Sheperd disagrees!
Dr. Scott Sheperd has written a funny, logical, touching and hopeful book that will give you a totally new insight into the popular concept of stress. This is a book that will help you

Rethink how you look at stress - and your own role in it
Raise your awareness level on what you are doing that could be making life more difficult
Develop techniques to avoid giving away your power
Understand that the way you view stress affects both your work and home life
Quit fighting to stay miserable
Implement strategies to keep “Professional Negative” people from pulling you down
Realize that power is about choices; if you don’t see the choices, you don’t have the power
Acknowledge the importance of the words you use to describe your situations
Identify the importance of courage in moving forward with your life
Switch from just making a living to embracing the art of living
Learn what you must do to see the world with new eyes

Who In Charge? Attacking the Stress Myth edition by Scott Sheperd PhD Health Fitness Dieting eBooks Reviews

I read this book when I was going through the worst time in my life. It helped me so much that I ordered this for a friend. A must read for anyone who has ever bought or read a self help book.
This one is the best I have ever read.
It truly changed my life
That's the core message -- and starting point -- of Scott Sheperd's new book attacking what he calls the "stress myth," the popular belief that stress is some mysterious force that we cannot control, only manage.
Sheperd refuses to buy into that theory, and quickly shows how absurd most modern conceptions of stress really are. In a no-bull, plain-speaking style, he shows readers how they can overcome the sense of overwhelm and frustration that "stress" creates. His ideas are not the mere pie-in-the-sky, think-positive-and-it's-all-good ideas, but truly useful approaches that anyone can use to enjoy life more each and every day.
One of the best self-help gems of 2002, WHO'S IN CHARGE? is a must-read for those seeking sane, sensible ideas to conquer the stress and control their own lives.
Scott Sheperd has written a helpful tome for people who are overstressed. His premise is that stress has been given too much of a role and that individuals can help themselves by exercising their personal power to respond to stress. First, Sheperd argues convincingly that stress has been applied ambigouosly and can lead people to feel as if they are simply subjects vulnerable to outside forces with no recourse for improvement. For example, he shows how stress surveys categorize seemingly good events - like marriage or the birth of a child, for example - as stressful events. He also argues that whether an event is experienced as stressful is mostly up to the individual. He gives as an example divorce, where one party may find it a depressing stressful event and the other party may be elated. He risks oversimplifying here but I think he makes a good point, particularly about the efforts to assign value points to stressors; e.g. 100 for divorce; 20 for a new job, etc. Sheperd's message has been stated elsewhere - it's not what happens to you but how you respond to what happens to you that matters. His bests piece of advice is to identify the specific emotions that you are feeling and the reasons for those emotions, rather than refer to the catch-all "stress". For example, instead of saying "my job is stressing me out", say "I feel overhwlemed by my workload". The latter implies solutions and responses, and open the possibility for using your personal power to address the situation.

Sheperd's message and advice, and the details on how to carry it out, are particularly persuasive because he has applied it in the trenches, with groups and individuals who have suffered terrible personal loses, like the loss of loved ones, or who are in desperate situations themselves, like being diagnosed with terminal illness. Sheperd's humorous and blunt writing style make Who's In Charge a quick and useful read.
